Everything to Know About Sativa Strains

Even those who consider themselves veteran cannabis consumers can sometimes struggle to point out what exactly it means for a cannabis plant to be considered sativa, indica, or hybrid. Luckily, we here at Bad Gramm3r can help light the way from ignorance to knowledge with our deep dive on cannabis sativa.

What is Cannabis Sativa?

Cannabis plants are typically split into three groups of strains: sativa-dominant, indica-dominant, and hybrid. Due to the way that generations of cannabis cultivators have crossbred strains, it is extremely rare to find anything at your local dispensary that would be considered pure indica or pure sativa. That is, most things are hybrids.

However, there are variations of hybrids where one classification weighs heavier than the other. So, when we refer to sativa strains here, they are actually sativa-dominant hybrids and not pure sativa.

From a physical standpoint, sativa plants grow up to 20 feet tall and often have a lanky appearance. Sativa plants typically have large, furry buds with thin leaves. Sativa can also smell sweet with just the right amount of tropical tang.

What is the Difference Between Sativa and Indica?

Indica cannabis plants tend to offer a more bush-like appearance due to their short and stout physicality. Their leaves tend to be thick and dense, with almost a leathery finish. Indica strains also have a darker complexion with hints or highlights of purple. Their aroma is heavier, with strong notes of earthiness and musk.

These plants also tend to grow quicker than sativas. That makes them popular among cultivators.

What are the Effects of Cannabis Sativa?

Most cannabis consumers are aware that one group of strains tends to lift you up while the other tends to weigh you down. However, remembering which one is which can be difficult.

So, let’s seal this in your memory once and for all: indicas keep you in-da-couch. That is, they tend to offer relaxation and sedation to consumers. If you’ve ever had couch-lock after consuming cannabis, it was likely an indica-dominant strain. Indicas are popular among consumers as a sleep aid to reduce stressful feelings and improve appetite.

If indicas leave you feeling heavy, sativas generally do the opposite. They can stimulate you both physically and mentally. This means you’ll feel less cloudy and may experience bursts of energy, creativity, or laughing fits. Those that like to hike or safely spend time outside after consuming cannabis typically reach for sativa strains over indicas

What Are Terpenes?

Terpenes are a naturally occurring chemical compound that is often the source of a plant’s aroma. That’s any plant, not just cannabis. So, if you’ve ever enjoyed aromatherapy or just enjoyed the scent of freshly zested citrus, you’ve already had a positive terpene experience.

Concerning cannabis specifically, terpenes play a major role in not just how the plant smells but how it tastes when consumed. There is also some belief that terpenes could play a part in how you feel after consuming cannabis. While it’s unsure whether that’s due to something in the terpene specifically or due to the entourage effect of terpenes and cannabinoids working together, that means that a good portion of what you enjoy about cannabis is likely related to its terpene makeup.

Also, there may be a difference in terpene makeup between most indica and sativa strains. A terpene often found in higher abundance in indica strains, Myrcene is highly associated with feeling sedated.

You don’t need to know about specific terpenes’ concentration when trying out a new strain. If you notice that there are strains that you particularly enjoy, though, maybe take some time to dig deeper and find out if they share common terpenes.

How to Choose a Strain

It’s extremely difficult to create a one-size-fits-all guide to choosing the best strain for your needs. Because everyone is different, it’s possible to try a strain with a friend and find out you each had differing reactions to it.

Generally, though, the potency of a strain can be measured in its THC percentage. If you’re new to cannabis, it may be better to stick to less potent strains at first.

Another common cannabinoid is CBD. CBD won’t cause you to feel “high” but may positively reduce anxiety, pain, and nausea. Even if a strain contains a high concentration of THC, an equal amount of CBD may make it feel less intense.
