HYBRID CANNABIS STRAINS: WHAT IS HYBRID WEED?

HYBRID CANNABIS STRAINS: WHAT IS HYBRID WEED?

There are so many premium cannabis strains in the world, it can be hard to pick just one. Every strain is unique thanks to its own combination of cannabinoids and terpenes, which is why they’re all renowned for having different effects.

Even strains with identical levels of THC can lead to their own individual experiences. This makes it hard to compare strains, but we can start by grouping them into one of three categories:

  • Indica Strains
  • Sativa Strains
  • Hybrid Strains

What Are Hybrid Strains?

Some people find it useful to think of cannabis as a spectrum. Sativa strains are on one end of the spectrum, and hybrid strains are on the other. Everything in the middle is considered to be a hybrid.

Hybrid cannabis strains can lean toward the Indica or Sativa side, or they may be more balanced. For that reason, an understanding of hybrid strains starts with a firm grasp on Indica and Sativa strains.

Indica strains grow short in stature and their effects are most commonly associated with feelings of physical relaxation, increased appetite, and sleepiness.

These effects, known as a “body high,” are typically sought-after for consumption at night. Sativas, on the other hand, normally grow on tall, thin plants. They’re a popular choice for daytime consumption because the resulting “head high” is associated with feelings of creativity, alertness, and euphoria.

Effects of Hybrid Strains

Hybrid strains are great because they can deliver some of the effects of both Indicas and Sativas in a more balanced way. For example, some people find that pure Sativas make them feel overstimulated, but pure Indicas make them feel stuck to the couch.

For an experience that isn’t too extreme in one way or another, hybrids present a middle path. This is also nice for people who are relatively new to cannabis and aren’t exactly sure what they’re looking for yet.

Keep in mind that not all hybrids are the same. Some hybrids are Indica-dominant, others are Sativa-dominant, and then there are more balanced hybrid strains.

A knowledgeable budtender will be able to help you navigate the diverse options of hybrid strains. Many of our Alaskan customers like to try multiple hybrids until they find the right mix.

How Do You Get Hybrid Marijuana Strains?

Hybrids are created by crossing Indica plants with Sativa plants. Since Sativas typically grow in warm, wet climates and Indicas are better suited for climates with short growing seasons, some breeders started breeding them to create hardier plants.

In theory, hybrids will be able to fight off mold like Sativas while flowering quickly like Indicas, which allows them to grow quickly and healthily. Some cannabis cultivators also grow hybrid plants in an effort to reproduce some of the best characteristics of both Indicas and Sativas.

How to Pick the Best Hybrid Strain

If you’re not sure which hybrid strain appeals to you the most, a knowledgeable budtender will be able to talk you through some choices. You can also research the specific strains available at your local dispensary. Most cannabis customers start out by trying multiple different hybrid strains to get a feel for their personal preferences. Here in Alaska we know its important so we aim to bring you the best quality possible!
