Northern Lights is the child of Afghani and Thai landraces and was first developed on an island near Seattle. Since cultivating cannabis was still illegal in that area at the time, early breeders were very secretive about their craft. For that reason, it’s not entirely clear exactly who first created Northern Lights, but their work has become famous throughout the world. This strain has won multiple first place prizes in the Indica category at the Cannabis Cup.
In 1985, as the United States became less friendly for growers, Northern Lights moved to Holland. The cultivation company in Holland was known simply as The Seed Bank, and the lineage of Northern Lights started to get murky during its time there. Some Northern Lights varieties were turned into hybrids through crossing with Thai Sativas and other strains. Others, however, retained the pure Indica characteristics Northern Lights is so famous for.
In 1991, Sensi Seeds bought The Seed Bank. Sensi Seeds is one of the top seed banks in Amsterdam and throughout the Netherlands. They’re famous for producing some of the best cannabis in the world, and the Dutch Bureau of Medicinal Cannabis looks to them for the medical marijuana sold in pharmacies throughout the nation. This strain can now be found in many different genetic variations, and some people even perceive a good deal of Sativa characteristics when they consume Northern Lights.
