Strain Spotlight: Northern Lights in Wasilla, AK

Northern Lights is one of the most famous cannabis strains of all time, and there are plenty of good reasons for that. This traditionally pure Indica yields pungent buds with plenty of crystals and resin. Learn more about the history of this bud and what it can do for you, then decide if it’s the best cannabis strain for you.

Origins: Who Created Northern Lights Strain?

Northern Lights is the child of Afghani and Thai landraces and was first developed on an island near Seattle. Since cultivating cannabis was still illegal in that area at the time, early breeders were very secretive about their craft. For that reason, it’s not entirely clear exactly who first created Northern Lights, but their work has become famous throughout the world. This strain has won multiple first place prizes in the Indica category at the Cannabis Cup.

In 1985, as the United States became less friendly for growers, Northern Lights moved to Holland. The cultivation company in Holland was known simply as The Seed Bank, and the lineage of Northern Lights started to get murky during its time there. Some Northern Lights varieties were turned into hybrids through crossing with Thai Sativas and other strains. Others, however, retained the pure Indica characteristics Northern Lights is so famous for.

In 1991, Sensi Seeds bought The Seed Bank. Sensi Seeds is one of the top seed banks in Amsterdam and throughout the Netherlands. They’re famous for producing some of the best cannabis in the world, and the Dutch Bureau of Medicinal Cannabis looks to them for the medical marijuana sold in pharmacies throughout the nation. This strain can now be found in many different genetic variations, and some people even perceive a good deal of Sativa characteristics when they consume Northern Lights.

What to Expect from Northern Lights

Like any type of cannabis, the shape and size of Northern Lights buds may depend partially upon how it is trimmed and handled. That said, this particular strain frequently comes in long, finger-like nugs. As you start to break up the bud, you’ll notice sweet and spicy natural aromas. The earthy pine scent and flavor from Northern Lights is not unlike the smell of an Alaskan woodland itself.

Much like a viewing of its namesake, the Aurora Borealis, the Northern Lights strain will leave you feeling uplifted, euphoric, and relaxed. Some people feel a degree of psychoactive effects after consuming Northern Lights, and the creative glow makes this strain a great companion for appreciating the beauty of nature. Even when people feel inspired at the beginning of the experience, the effects of Northern Lights generally trend toward sleepiness as time goes on.

Northern Lights is famous for creating calming effects on both the body and mind. People frequently use this strain to feel better if they’ve been stressed or in pain. A terrific nighttime bud, Northern Lights is one of our personal favorites when it comes to helping people get to sleep. High THC levels produce powerful effects quickly, and just a little bit of this strain should be enough to get you where you want to go.
